Journalist Programmer

Shaping the future of news

Goal

Filtering Failure

Our goal is to develop technology that takes journalism to the next level, help to filter the huge flow of information and presents the most relevant news to each reader.

The web is programmable!
To connect the data, enhance connections and discover patterns, we use semantic web resources, public databases, Wikipedia, Twitter, Facebook and Google, among others.

What We Do

News Stand @ Beijing City

We produce technologies that can help filter out those increasing amounts of information that challenge the capabilities of the journalist.

We create customization and weighting algorithms to present a newspaper for each reader.

We code useful services to enhance the power of the journalist in the increasingly complex information environment.

We colect and process news to gather topics, detect emerging patterns (on news and readers' habits) and provide data analysis.

We build native applications (web, tablets) for online newspapers.

We reinforce the newsroom with analytic tools, both real time and historic (newsroom intelligence).

How We Do It

Linked Data (Semantic Web) candies

We use open source technologies, lexical and semantic databases -- external and internal. We develop code that can filter and prioritize information and present it on the web or apps - or for integration into websites.

We use primarily PHP and Python. To archive the information we use MySQL and NoSQL. At the presentation level, we use HTML5 and JavaScript.

We provide data in integration formats XML and JSON.

Our Work

Tópicos, Jornal de Negócios

"Jornal de Negócios" is the leading online newspaper in Portugal.

Our system generates and updates thousands of topics' pages with links to economic news all around.

Two visualization modes: list sorted according to the weight of each topic and a cloud of words.

A word cloud of the day is published in the printed edition.

Sites: Tópicos and Tópicos internacionais

Palavras-chave, Correio da Manhã

"Correio da Manhã" is the undisputed leader of popular dailies in Portugal.

The topics system is a twin of the previous. It differs by using hypertext to only link the archives of "Correio da Manhã" and the publications of the media group to which it belongs.

The visualization mode chosen was the word cloud.

Site: Palavras-chave

Topics, RTL.be

The television station RTL has the most viewed site in French-speaking Belgium.

We have created a complex first page with a highlighted topic, search, list of the most recent pictures with the most frequent topics and a "photomosaic" of the topics of the day.

The Topics & connections management system applied here is the second generation. It includes a back office where journalists approve topics, edit content and curate connections between the topics.

Site: Thèmes

Photo mosaic

For the portuguese sports newspaper Record, we developed a particular visualization mode: a photographic mosaic where the images are proportional to the importance of their topics in a given period (in this case, the last 12 hours).

The universe of sources in this case was extended to the most important sports blogs.

Topics & Connections, a short presentation

The necessity and the principles that led to the development of this service explained in a short presentation. Click the forward button to see it.

More details on the Topic & Connections, as well as our other services for newspapers, journalists and newsrooms, can be ordered from our form.

M3Wall, motivational media monitoring

Service for internal use in newsrooms.

It's a newsroom intelligence tool: allows real-time analysis and of various data differentiators.

Among several possible frameworks is the comparative performance on Facebook, presented on the right image in one of its details.
